Organize Your Bedroom Closet

This week we are focusing on Weeks 34 in the book, Organize Now! a week-by-week guide to simplify your space and your life.

Organize Your Bedroom Closet

I was especially excited for this week’s challenge, Organize your Bedroom Closet. I tend to keep my bedroom closet relatively organized. However, I wanted to utilize Jennifer’s advice to see where I could improve. Her idea on page 158 is right on – “The first rule of organizing any closet is to create a visible and accessible home for everything stored in the space.” Completely makes sense. I stood looking inside my closet in each area/zone for a while asking myself, “Does this work? And if it doesn’t how am I going to make it better?” As I kept that in mind, I started the decision making process of what I was going to keep versus what I was going to donate or throw out. I went through every article of clothing and pair of shoes in my closet.

Jennifer’s tips below helped me to decide what to toss by being honest with myself:

  • You have not worn it in more than one year
  • You do not feel good in it
  • It is out of style
  • You just don’t like it
  • It doesn’t fit
  • It is worn out, ripped or stained

Another point that I found myself asking in the thinking process:

  • Does it reflect who I am now?

With that part complete, everything that is in my closet now is what I want to have and what I really enjoy wearing. The other items that are not staying will be donated. Jennifer recommends passing an item on to someone who will get more use out of it and I completely agree.

How is your bedroom closet coming along?  Are you still with us on this challenge?  What hangers do you prefer?

How did you do on last week’s challenge of organizing your kitchen??

Thank you Brandy! I appreciate your comments. I went to your blog and think it’s great. You did a wonderful job so far in the challenge. It’s so crazy how much “stuff” we accumulate in a short period of time. That’s a big reason why I joined the 12 Week Challenge that Jennifer started. I needed the motivation and help to really work on being organized for the long haul and not just a temporary fix. Take care!

Amazing job, Linda! I’m still hanging in there with the challenges. I’ve done two posts regarding the closet challenge over at http://coffeecobwebs.blogspot.com/. Mine doesn’t look nearly so nice, but it’s level of functionality has increased dramatically. I’ve checked out the hangers that Jennifer recommends and I am in love! I am going to start picking up a few at a time and get switched over. I discovered today that they are available at Dollar General as well as WalMart.
