Trunk storage: How to make the most out of your trunk space

Whether you’re packing up for a holiday, trying to fit your weekly groceries in the car, or squeezing the kids school stuff in, there just never seems to be enough trunk space.

Why should you organize your trunk?

Not only will organizing your trunk make finding your belongings a lot easier, but it’s also very important for your safety. Should you be forced to brake sharply, loose items can be thrown around and distract you while you’re driving.

A disorganized trunk can lead to fragile items being broken. Whether you’ve got an expensive birthday gift in the back or eggs in your grocery shopping, you want to make sure there’s going to be no breakages!

Knowing exactly where everything is in your car not only means you can find things quickly, but it also prevents you from rummaging around while you’re driving. Keep everything in the trunk, and you’ve got no choice but to pull over to find what you’re looking for.

Collapsable storage

You can buy trunk storage units online or at a home store, and they provide a great way to keep your belongings neat and tidy. Driving around with loose items in the back leads to a tangled mess of items, so using a storage unit with different compartments can be a good way to keep everything in one place. Say goodbye to the days of rifling around trying to find things in the back, and make sure nothing valuable gets damaged.

You can also buy car storage which hangs from the back of the headrests. These are useful for storing all the kids things, as they can get to them easily. You just have to make sure they put them back again!

Whether you just want a small storage compartment for storing trunk essentials such as a flashlight, blanket and tow rope, or if you’re looking something which can organize your whole trunk, there’s a product out there to suit you.

Be ruthless

Anything you don’t need, take out. We all have a habit of throwing things in the trunk and leaving them there, but making sure you only have things you need can save you a lot of time and space.

Keep all the items which never leave the car in one compartment. You should have:

a flashlight

a blanket

a high-visibility jacket

de-icer and a scraper, in winter

and a tow rope

In an emergency, you’ll be able to access everything you need quickly, if you’re organized enough!

Everything else should be taken out with you. Make sure there’s no loose paper, plastic bottles or kids toys. We know this can be difficult when you’ve got the kids and all their belongings to unload, but teaching them to take their things back in with them can make unloading the car a little easier.

Packing tips

If you’re packing up the car for a longer journey, some simple packing techniques can help you conserve space. If possible, use soft bags instead of hard suitcases. These don’t have to be carry cases, as you can buy a set with wheels.

Buy some vacuum storage bags to pack your clothes in to create more space. They’re not expensive, and are great for families with a lot of luggage. Limit the amount of toys the kids can take with them. Giving them one bag to pack whatever they want in is a good way to limit what they take with them.

Organizing your trunk can be a daunting task, but once you’ve done it, you’ll save so much time loading and unloading. Do it today and you’ll never go back to your disorganized ways!
