Your summer vacation is an important investment of your time and your money. In some cases, it may be something that you have dreamt about doing for a long time. All the more reason to start organizing your plans early so that you can make the most of the experience.

Vacations are important for your well-being. We all need a break from the routine every once in a while. And time away from work will refresh you and improve your focus when you return. Use your vacation time even if you can’t afford to take a trip. Stay-cations are very popular now. You can stay at home, and explore the attractions in your area. Remember, you don’t have to spend money to relax or make memories.

Summer Vacation Planning Tips:

1. Establish how many vacation days you have for the year.

Then decide how many you are willing to use during the summer months.

2. Take a look at your finances and determine how much you can spend on a vacation.

Establish a realistic budget before you decide where you want to go. Set up a separate savings account or envelope, specifically for your vacation and make a set contribution each pay period to reach your goal. You may need to save for several months so start now.

3. Sit down and discuss options with the people you vacation with.

Try to do this at least six months before your ideal departure date. The earlier you start, the less stressed you will be and the more money you can save. Ask your friends and family about their favorite vacation spots.

What was their favorite thing to do?

4. Designate a vacation file.

You will need a place to keep all of your vacation plans (even if it’s a stay-cation): your itinerary, research, and options. This could be a file on your computer, a paper file, a notebook or a binder—whatever works for you. Include any contact information, travel agent number, airline itinerary, hotel phone number, rental car information, etc.

5. Establish a vacation zone.

A vacation zone is a designated area where you can keep things you are taking on vacation with you. This is a great place to start putting passports, travel toiletries, and camera accessories.
