Home Staging: A New Take on Spring Cleaning

Well, it FINALLY feels like spring here in New York. I don't know about you but the nice weather and the sunshine always make me feel more alive, energetic, and ready to clean and organize like crazy!  Spring in New York is a huge time for people to list their homes for sale, people really try to avoid moving in the snow and cold if they can help it.

So I have been doing a ton of home staging and helping women declutter so they can list their houses. This is honestly one of my favorite things to do as a professional organizer.

Every time I start on a project like this I laugh because my clients always say "I might not want to sell it after we are done staging and organizing it!" That got me thinking...

What if this spring you pretended you were selling your home to get it all freshly cleaned, organized, and clutter-free?

How motivating would THAT be??

I know at first it might seem a little crazy and VERY overwhelming but...I promise you it would feel amazing to live in a home that you could literally list on any day.

A home that you would feel peace and contentment with.

A home that was ready for you to host a BBQ for your friends and family this summer WITHOUT excuses!

A home that feels light and free!

This is what a staged, clean, organized home feels like. It is how you should feel every day that you spend living in your home. Not just when you are ready to move.

I dare you to try this idea of spring staging!  Here are the steps:

Home staging is a strategic approach to preparing your property for sale, aiming to showcase its best features and appeal to the broadest range of potential buyers. By thoughtfully arranging furniture, decor, and other elements, you can create an inviting atmosphere that helps buyers envision themselves living in the space.

1. Declutter and Depersonalize

Begin by removing excess items and personal belongings. A clutter-free environment allows buyers to focus on the home's features rather than distractions. Store personal photos, memorabilia, and any items that might prevent buyers from imagining the home as their own.

2. Deep Clean Every Space

A spotless home conveys that it has been well-maintained. Ensure all areas, including less obvious spots like baseboards, windowsills, and light fixtures, are thoroughly cleaned. Consider hiring professional cleaners for a comprehensive job.

3. Optimize Furniture Arrangement

Arrange furniture to highlight the room's dimensions and functionality. Avoid overcrowding by removing unnecessary pieces, creating an open and spacious feel. Ensure there's a clear flow through each room, making it easy for buyers to navigate and visualize their own furnishings in the space.

4. Neutralize Color Schemes

While bold colors can be expressive, they might not appeal to all buyers. Opt for neutral tones on walls and decor to create a blank canvas. This allows buyers to imagine adding their personal touch without being influenced by existing color choices.

5. Enhance Lighting

Bright and well-lit spaces feel more welcoming. Maximize natural light by opening curtains and blinds during showings. Supplement with ambient, task, and accent lighting to ensure every room is adequately illuminated.

6. Highlight Key Features

Draw attention to your home's best attributes, such as a fireplace, built-in shelving, or architectural details. Arrange furniture and decor to emphasize these features, making them focal points in the room.

7. Create Inviting Outdoor Spaces

Don't neglect the exterior; curb appeal is vital. Ensure the lawn is manicured, gardens are tidy, and any outdoor furniture is clean and well-placed. A welcoming entrance sets a positive tone for the entire viewing experience.

8. Make Necessary Repairs

Address minor repairs that could deter potential buyers, such as leaky faucets, squeaky doors, or chipped paint. Demonstrating that the home is well cared for can increase its perceived value.

By implementing these home staging strategies, you can create an environment that appeals to a wide range of buyers, potentially leading to a quicker sale at a favorable price. Remember, the goal is to help buyers envision themselves living in the space, making it easier for them to say "yes" to your home
